I want to eat more healthy but... where to start?!
There are hundreds of different dietary theories out there, so it’s no wonder people are overwhelmed and don’t know where they should start when they decide that they “want to eat more healthy”.
These diets typically focus on what foods you can’t eat and don’t take into consideration that each of them will affect every person differently – there is no one-size-fits-all 100% healthy diet, you have to figure out what works best for you.
Here I’d like to simplify things and share just 3 simple guidelines on where you can start, and focus what you can eat:
Eat unprocessed whole foods as much as possible. An easy rule of thumb is to eat a rainbow and choose vegetables and fruits with all different colours. Buy local and organic where possible to maximise the nutrients you’re getting while minimising any pesticides, hormones and other toxins. This also includes choosing free-range poultry and eggs, grass-fed meats, and wild-caught fish as good sources of animal protein.
Eat healthy fats for crucial cell and brain function. Include sources from avocados, nuts and seeds, coconut oil, olive oil and fatty fish such as salmon and sardines.
Drink quality water to keep hydrated and help flush out any toxins.
Try to incorporate just one small tip from the list above and notice how you feel, and then add in another tip and so forth. Listen to your body as you add in each small change and decide if it is working for you, and if this is a sustainable change that will form into a new healthy habit.
These simple nutrition guidelines combined with other lifestyle factors including sleep, exercise, relationships, and stress management – form the basis of a holistic approach to your health. The only trick is to find the right balance for you.
